Summary
The purpose of this technical note is to introduce Performance Monitor tool default system performance data collector. Windows provides the tool, "Performance Monitor", that allows for a pre-configured data collector or manual configured data collector to be executed. The Data Collectors have multiple categories that cover the entire system, CPU, Network, Disk, Memory. The User has the capability to further select on specific parameters within each category.
Creating a User Defined Data Collector
A user can create a user defined data collector by right-clicking on "user defined" as show in the image below. To complete the new user defined "data collector", follow the series of steps as shown in the images below. Make note that you will select the "system performance" template and also make note of the directory location of the log files. You will later visit this location
ADJUSTING THE STOP CONDITION
Once the data collector is completed, the stop condition can be modified. By default the data collector will run for 1 minute and stop. You can adjust it to 0 minutes so that the data collection is started and stopped manually. Other conditions for completing and restarting exists, these can be explored by the user if needed.
Start and Stop:
Once the data collector and the stop condition has been configured, the user can start and stop the data collection. Below is an image that shows the selections available when right clikcing on the data collector.
Reports
The test will execute and show the data collection in progress. Notice that results are shown within the Reports section of Perfmon, User Defined. Once completed, the results will be shown in this same location. In addition, there will be a histogram found in the results directory.
