This KB reviews how to do a VAX Database back-up to a Shared Network Drive.
* This references version 2.9 Vax

Summary

* The information noted is intended for individuals familiar with PC and Network Administration.

By default, VAX backups run as the SYSTEM account on the server.
This account has no permissions to access anything on the network, so it will never be able to save the backup on a network share.
In order to backup to a network share, the user will need to configure a Windows User that has permissions to write to the network share, and has database privileges to perform backup.

Domain Environment
1) Create a Domain Account for backup user to run under
2) Give account write privileges to network share to backup to
3) Give account login and backup privileges to database
4) On Backup page, when Network Share is selected, enter Username and Password of account

Non-Domain Environment
1) Create local Windows Account to run backups under
2) Login as user, setup Credentials to access network share
    a) Browse to network share, enter credentials and hit Save checkbox at bottom
    b) Go to Control Panel -> Credential Manager and add appropriate credentials to access network share.
3) Give account login and backup privileges to database
4) On Backup page, when Network Share is selected, enter Username and Password of account

Database Permissions
1) Open a Command Prompt
2) Enter the following commands:
    sqlcmd -S .\VAX
    CREATE LOGIN [DOMAIN\USER] FROM WINDOWS
    use VAX
CREATE USER [USER] FOR LOGIN [DOMAIN\USER]
    GRANT BACKUP DATABASE TO [DOMAIN\USER]
    go
