General Description:
With the growing demand for PoE-based devices, the offering of PoE switches has also grown. To add to this, the options to provide PoE+ as well as High Power PoE, make selecting the right switch an even more complicated task than before.
This document is written to clarify some of the points that need to be considered when offering a particular switch for a certain job. The document only discusses the need from a power point of view and not from a networking capabilities one (which still must be followed).
Here is a real world example of POE insufficient power issues.
With the 3Com switch in the web browser interface the port max power is set for 30W per port. The interface does not have a setting to set the class or to set the max power for each port. The only options in the browser are to set port priority or to Guarantee 30W to a port.
In the switch command line interface I found that I am able to set each individual port to what is shown as High Power mode. With high power mode set to disabled the switch shows the port set for 30W. I set high power mode to enabled. The switch still shows that it is set for 30W but now the camera will not reset when the IR is on or during the transition from night to day. There is no indication in the browser that a port is set for high power mode.
The Command Line Interface is not documented in the 3-Com switch manual. A customer would need to be familiar with the switch to know that this setting is there.
